You Are What You Speak

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)

Have you ever heard the saying, "You are what you eat"? Well, in the realm of faith, it's more like, "You are what you speak.” Your heart and mouth work together in a cycle. What you say influences what's in your heart, and what's in your heart comes right out of your mouth. Now, that can be a good thing–or a dangerous one.

Fear, for instance, can cause us to get in an unhealthy spiral of despair. It sneaks into our heart, and suddenly, our words are soaked in it. Ever notice how when you focus on your worries, they seem to multiply? That's your mouth at work. But here's the secret: it works both ways. Just as you can fill your heart with fear through your words, you can also fill it with faith.

Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 12? "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." That means your heart's content shapes your words. That’s one reason the enemy loves media so much. He pollutes television, radio, and the internet so that your heart’s content will be contaminated, and it kills your faith because you release your words on the wrong things.

Think of your mouth as a powerful weapon. It's like a sword, ready to cut through challenges or a sharp knife that you turn and cut yourself with. We need to realize the best weapon of choice for us is the Word of God. When you speak God's promises over your situations, you're deploying your faith and cutting down mountains to nothing. Now, when that mountain seems too tall, don't turn your sword on yourself. Instead, wield it against the problem. Believe in your heart, speak with authority, and watch transformation happen. You have what you say. Watch your mouth and what comes out of it.

Practical Application

Write a declaration of faith and speak it over yourself every day. Know what the Word says about who you are and what you can have. Then speak it over yourself by faith. You are what you speak. Your mouth will affect your heart and your heart will affect your mouth.
