Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. (1 Peter 5:5-6)
Paul encouraged both those that are younger and those who are more mature to submit to one another and be humble in our interactions. In a world that often celebrates self-promotion and pride, the Word of God stands as a counter-cultural message, calling us to clothe ourselves with humility. When we humbly submit ourselves to one another, we create an atmosphere of mutual respect and support. The world paints humility as a negative trait. They say that it stops you from making big moves and being successful in the world. However, the Word tells us that humility is not a sign of weakness, but a great strength and true reliance on God.
God makes it clear that He resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humility opens the floodgates for the manifestation of the Holy Spirit to be on display in our lives. It is not about diminishing our value or worth, but acknowledging that all we have and all we are is a gift from God.
When we live our lives humbling ourselves under the mighty hand of God, we trust His timing and knowledge. That way, instead of striving to exalt ourselves, we surrender our lives to Him, allowing Him to lift us up to high places. God's timing is perfect, and when we humble ourselves, we align our will with His. Then His power brings exaltation, not our own striving and schemes.
Practical Application
When we encounter people, whether younger or more mature, we need to learn to approach them with respect and willingness to learn from each other. Humility means setting aside our ego and self-promotion, and giving value to the people who are around you. How can you purposely honor people today?
