Every Word, Every Deed

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. (Colossians 3:17)

Whatsoever is an all-encompassing word. Paul used it to indicate he wasn’t talking about strictly spiritual or natural things. He wasn’t addressing only business issues or relationship issues. Paul said that everything you do in life is supposed to be done in the name of the Lord Jesus.

The Greek word for name is onoma, and it means authority and character. It seems to be easy for some believers to operate in authority, but when it comes to functioning in Jesus’ character, that’s another issue because it entails walking in love. Jesus’ outstanding characteristic is His love. So, to do everything in Jesus’ character means to do everything in love.

What does that look like? Paul was very explicit. He noted we are to not only do things in love, but we should also speak in love.

Love doesn’t ignore correction. Sometimes, love must help people grow and improve, but the words we use when correcting people should be laced with the love of God, even when we are dealing with difficult situations.

Practical Application

What words do you use when you need to correct someone? Do you use words that aren’t constructive, helpful, or loving when people are difficult or situations seem to be out of your control? Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you recognize when you’re about to speak negatively to someone. Set a guard on your lips to only speak the truth in love.
