Faithful in Service, Positioned for Promotion

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured. (Genesis 39:6)

Joseph eventually rose to become second in command over all of Egypt. However, he didn’t start out in a position of power; he began as a servant to Potiphar, who recognized the anointing in his life and how everything he touched flourished. Joseph was so diligent and excellent in his work that his master didn’t worry about his own affairs. He trusted that Joseph had everything under control.

Too often, people pursue promotions without first demonstrating their faithfulness in their current roles. They seek to be recognized, celebrated, noticed, and quickly promoted. However, Joseph illustrates a different path to receiving God’s promotion: faithfulness. Faithfulness in serving where God has placed us is essential for supernatural promotion. When you manage what God has entrusted to you with excellence, He will deliver the promotion in His time.

Joseph’s faithfulness was displayed because, to him, he wasn’t simply serving Potiphar; he was serving the Lord. The Bible tells us that he was “goodly” and “well-favored,” meaning he possessed a strong character and immense favor from God. Good character and great favor go hand in hand. When you are faithful, favor will always accompany you.

Joseph didn’t manipulate his way to the top of the corporate ladder; he served his way there. Stay faithful, serve with excellence, and expect that God has a promotion planned.

Practical Application

In your workplace, are you delivering excellent service, even when you know no one is watching? Are you as committed to the small tasks as you are to those in the “spotlight”? Do you cut corners, or do you pursue excellence in everything you do? God honors faithfulness in service.
