Giants and Grasshoppers

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:30-33)

As the twelve spies ventured into Canaan, the land of the promise, the land of fulfillment and success, the dichotomy of their perspectives became easily seen. Ten returned with a story full of doubt and impossibility spoken with words of fear and defeat. "We can’t do this!” they exclaimed, overwhelmed by the fortified cities and the giants that inhabited the land. In their eyes, the challenges were too big, and they saw themselves as grasshoppers. But even as this report was being declared, two men stood and spoke faith. Joshua and Caleb, in the spirit of faith, declared, "We are well able to overcome it."

They saw the same things the other ten saw, but their faith was not clouded by the physical size of the giants or the strength of the cities. Instead, it was rooted in an unshakable belief in the power of God and faith in His promise. God said He would give them this land, and they believed Him! To them, the giants were mere bread; an opportunity for God to showcase His might.

How do you perceive challenges? Do you see them as insurmountable giants or as opportunities for God to work wonders on your behalf? Stop seeing yourself as a grasshopper and see yourself as a giant in Christ!

Practical Application

What challenge or giant are you currently facing? God is bigger than anything you’re facing! Speak words of faith and don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked by the doubts of the enemy.

Numbers 14:37; Amos 2:9
