God Hears those who Fear Him

Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. (Malachi 3:16-17)

The word fear in this verse doesn’t mean to be afraid.  It refers to a deep respect and awe for God. This fear is not about being scared but about honoring God.

Notice it says those who feared the Lord spoke often to one another? There is power in being part of a community of faith that provides support and accountability and builds each member up in the fear of the Lord.

The Bible says that the Lord hearkened and heard what the faithful said to each other. God is attentive to the conversations and actions of those who will honor Him and each other in a faith community. There is something powerful about corporate prayer and studying the Bible together. Malachi wrote that God has a book of remembrance. Other stories in the Bible tell of kings who kept a record of those who honored them in the same way. You can be sure that your faithfulness to follow God will not be overlooked but remembered. He keeps a record of your obedience and plans to reward you.

God saves those who fear Him, revere Him, respect Him, and hold Him in awe. This does not just mean being saved from hell but also healing, protection, provision, and deliverance from the plots of the evil one.

Practical Application

Are you part of a local body of believers? Make it a point to surround yourself with a community of believers who share your reverence for God. Engage in meaningful conversations that encourage and build up one another. Knowing God listens to these interactions, share your experiences, struggles, and especially your victories.
