God’s Depth of Love

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:12-15)

In the third chapter of Genesis, Adam and Eve sinned against God by disobeying His commandments. They sided with Satan instead of God and believed the lies of the enemy over the truth of God’s Word. As a result, they experienced the consequences of their disobedience by being expelled from the Garden. They first, suffered spiritual death, and then, hundreds of years later, physical death. They were separated from the manifest presence of God. God was angry at the sin that severed the relationship He desired with man. As angry as God was at the sin, He still loved the sinners. Even though Adam and Eve sinned, God didn’t give up on humanity. He had a plan from the very beginning to redeem us from sin and death. God promised Eve He would send a Savior who would crush the head of the serpent. This promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He came to die on the cross for our sins, to take the punishment that we deserved, and to offer us the gift of adoption into the Kingdom and eternal life. Jesus satisfied God’s anger and restored peace between God and man. Now, we can have a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father and experience His love, His mercy, and His grace. The enemy still seeks to deceive and destroy Christians. That’s why the Bible teaches we must be vigilant and sober while resisting the lies of the enemy.

Practical Application

God loved you so much He sent Jesus to redeem you! Resist the temptation to listen to the lies of the enemy. He never tells the truth about who you are in Christ or the depth of God’s love.
