Live Watchful

Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. (Matthew 24:40-42)

Being watchful for the signs of the times and the return of the Lord doesn’t mean quitting your job and reading the book of Revelation all day. Both women in this prophecy were working in the field. One was watchful and observant of what the Lord was doing, and the other was doing their job with no thought of the Lord. Believers don’t work like people of the world work. We are called to be diligent when it comes to fulfilling the task and to do our job as if we are doing it for the Lord and not for man. That means paying close attention to what the Lord would have us say and do while on the job.

The word “watch” is vitally important in this scripture.  The word watch is the Greek word grégoreó and means “to stay awake, to be vigilant, responsible,  and watchful.” It means paying close attention and not letting anything distract you from hearing what the Holy Spirit is saying in a moment. When answering emails and dealing with co-workers, customers, or employees, do everything as unto the Lord.

Practical Application

Being ready for the Lord’s return means honoring God through our actions, words, and responses to others. Don’t allow yourself to get complacent and treat days as ordinary because, to those who are in Christ, there is no such thing as an ordinary day. You change the atmosphere when you show up. Live watchful.

1 Thessalonians 5:6; Revelation 16:15
