One of the Most Significant Issues in the Church

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

One of the most significant issues in the church is pride. I often encounter young ministers and pastors who become so enamored with the gifts and callings God has given them that they begin to seek their own path instead of His. Instead of focusing on God and His Word, they use their gifts to promote themselves and their particular niche in ministry.

The call to humble themselves in 2 Chronicles reminds us that pride serves as a barrier to God’s intervention. When a nation or an individual lives as if they have everything and do not need God’s wisdom, strength, or favor, God will give them what they desire—more of themselves and none of Him.

Humility involves recognizing our dependence on God and our need for His guidance, power, and direction. That’s why God instructs nations to pray and seek My face. He signifies the importance of earnest, heartfelt communication with Him. Seeking His face implies a deep desire to know Him and align with His will. Prayer is not just reciting lofty religious phrases and hoping that mere words will magically prompt God to act. Prayer is personal, heartfelt, and passionate. It’s about being face-to-face with God and seeking His thoughts and ways. When people approach prayer with this heart, they naturally turn from their wicked ways. This is true repentance—a complete turnaround from sinful behaviors and attitudes because your heart is intertwined with His.

God promises that those who genuinely seek Him will hear from heaven, receive forgiveness for their sins, and have their land healed. God is eager to respond to humility and sincere repentance. He desires to bring healing and blessings, using you as a platform to demonstrate His love and power.

Practical Application

Develop a deep desire to know God more intimately. Spend extra time in prayer and the Word, not trying to manipulate God or situations but to know Him more. As you seek His face, you will get more out of your private time with Him.
