Righteous and Unrighteous Leaders

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn. (Proverbs 29:2)

We have all lived at times under an unrighteous ruler, whether that was a president who promoted and embraced sin, a boss who in no way promoted or agreed with Christian values, or even a parent who did the antithesis of what the Bible dictates.

With this understanding, the wisdom of this verse becomes clear. When wicked individuals hold authority, their corrupt and unjust practices lead to widespread suffering and discontent. Such leaders prioritize their interests above the well-being of the people, resulting in oppression, injustice, and turmoil.

On the contrary, when the righteous hold authority, their leadership fosters a society where people can thrive and rejoice. Righteous leaders ensure their actions align with God's principles. A community's well-being is closely linked to its leaders' character, making it essential for leaders to uphold Biblical standards.

The impact of leadership is not just a theoretical concept but a practical reality that affects every aspect of life. Every believer is called to be a leader in some area or aspect of life because God wants to impact society through obedience and faith.

God’s desire is not to punish but rather to promote and bless. That is why He has given us His Word—not to keep us in line but to give us a blueprint for living a life of peace, joy, and blessing while on this earth.

Practical Application

Take time today to pray for those in authority. Ask God to guide them in righteousness and wisdom, and to provide them with strong Christian counsel. Pray that their hearts will align with God's will, and that their decisions will reflect His justice and compassion.

Proverbs 28:12; Proverbs 11:10
