Rooted in Humility, Branches of Grace

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. (Romans 11:18-19)

In our journey of faith, it is crucial to maintain a heart of humility and unity. What did Paul mean when he said to: “Boast not against the branches”? He was telling us that to be mindful of how we speak about our Jewish brethren and guard against prideful boasting.

The beautiful imagery that Paul used with branches and roots served as a powerful illustration. Just as branches depend on the root for nourishment and life, we, as followers of Christ, depend on Jesus, the true Root, for our spiritual sustenance. When we boast against the branches, we fail to recognize our own dependence on the very heritage and lineage that brought us our Messiah. We are called to not act superior or separate from our Jewish roots, but to extend gratitude and reverence for the roots that have grown our faith.

We are beneficiaries of God's plan, not by our wisdom or strength or ability, but through His redemptive work. Any sense of pride or entitlement should be changed to a profound gratitude for the unmerited favor we have received. So, as we reflect on our spiritual heritage, let us be intentional in cultivating a heart of humility and gratitude. Our faith is not an opportunity for arrogance, but an invitation to be vessels of love, reconciliation, and unity. We should celebrate the background of where our faith comes from and be in awe at the rich tapestry of God's plan, embracing the diversity of His people, and recognizing our shared identity as members of the body of Christ.

Practical Application

Practice humility by acknowledging your dependence on God and His redemptive work in your life. Treat others, especially our Jewish brethren, with genuine respect and honor, recognizing the common heritage we share.
