Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother. (Romans 16:23)
Have you ever known someone who embodied the character of a servant? They are always helping, setting up, or aiding someone else when things need to get done.Erastus was one of these people. He embodied godly leadership. Biblical leadership emphasizes humility, selflessness, and serving others rather than lording over them. Paul’s mention of Erastus, the city's chamberlain (or treasurer), highlights how governmental leadership was perceived in the first century. Historical records, such as inscriptions found in Corinth, confirm that he was a man of wealth and stature.
However, in biblical times, a treasurer's role was not to gain power or wealth for themselves but to wisely steward resources for the public good. In ancient Greece, treasurers were chosen from the wealthiest citizens because they viewed public service as an honor. Leaders like Erastus often contributed from their wealth to fund civic projects, leaving behind something of value—a bridge, building, street project, or monument—for the community. Paul’s mention of Erastus shows that Christians can and should hold positions of influence in secular society, especially government. Whether as a treasurer, city official, or business leader, believers are called to shine the light of Christ through integrity, generosity, and service.Erastus demonstrated authentic Biblical leadership by giving sacrificially to serve others. Servant leadership involves prioritizing the needs of others; however, modern leadership has drifted from this servant-oriented model in many ways.
Today, leadership often emphasizes authority, control, and personal success. This passage gives us a glimpse of how early Christians lived out their faith in positions of influence, and it challenges us to reflect on what it means to lead as Christ did—with humility and service.
