Speech Should Not Be Hindered

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. (Leviticus 25:10)

Liberty is a powerful word. It evokes images of Independence Day and the Emancipation Proclamation. But what does it truly mean to be free? Biblically, we recognize that freedom is a God-given gift. America's founding fathers sought to articulate this and instill this principle in the nation.

Today, many people trade freedom for security. They allow the government to dictate what they can and cannot say in exchange for the peace of knowing that the government is telling them what to do. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution enshrines freedom of speech and religion because the founders recognized its importance. When speech is controlled or silenced, freedom itself is lost.

Without the right to speak, the Church cannot preach the Gospel freely, challenge injustice, or illuminate the truth in a dark world. The enemy understands this, which is why attempts to silence Christians are increasing worldwide. The suppression of speech often starts subtly—labeling certain ideas as “disinformation” or “dangerous.” However, as we’ve seen, much of what was once labeled disinformation will ultimately be revealed as truth.

Please remember that this battle isn’t political; it’s spiritual. The enemy wants to suppress the truth and silence the Gospel because he knows the power of God’s Word. As believers, we must stay vigilant, discern the times, and stand firm in our freedom to proclaim the truth.

Practical Application

You must recognize the importance of free speech, not just as a civil right but as a spiritual tool. Stand up for this right with your voice and vote, knowing it’s critical to the Church's mission.
