Spiritual Restoration

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:1-2)

What happens when people slip and fall into sin? Too many times, I have seen other Christians attack them head on, acting like they are more spiritual than the person who got brought down by sin, but is that what the Bible tells us to do?

Paul gave believers a better route to take. He says when other believers are overtaken in sin, those who count themselves as spiritual should be in the mindset to restore that person in the spirit of meekness. Meekness means that we have the understanding that we aren’t perfect and we too, make mistakes. Meekness means that I understand I still have things I need to work on.

Immature Christians criticize and ostracize others instead of offering a helping hand and healing words.

God wants us to have a restoration mindset. Restoration says, “I’m going to help those who fall get back up and succeed because I understand people get hurt and wounded in our world, and sometimes they need help to get back up.”

Our job as Christians is to help carry the load and take the weight off the shoulders of others, while offering to walk with them in the path of restoration.

God expects believers to give of their time, effort, and energy to help others heal and to get back on the righteous path to which God has called them.

Practical Application

Who can you support or help that is still healing from past pains, from things that happened to them, or things they have done? Pray for them and think of ways that you can support them with encouraging words of faith.
