The Best Gift

Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (Romans 5:14-15)

It doesn’t take long to watch the news, search the internet, or scroll through social media to find that our world is full of death and suffering. This doesn't just refer to physical death but also death in relationships, finances, and peace, which is rampant in our society. Death is the result of sin and the harsh reality of living in our world's system.

The good news is that Romans 5:14-15 doesn't end with sin. Paul wrote to his followers explaining that Adam was a figure of him that was to come, referring to Jesus Christ. Adam's disobedience brought us death, but Jesus' obedience brought us the free gift of salvation, righteousness, and abundant and eternal life through Jesus Christ.

The word abounded signifies an overflowing, abundant supply. God’s gift of grace isn’t just sufficient; it’s more than enough. And He has given all of that to you, and it’s more than enough.

Understanding this revelation of God's gift should inspire a mindset of gratitude and empower our daily lives regardless of the challenges we face.

Practical Application

When you feel overwhelmed by guilt, shame, or condemnation, remind yourself of the truth that God has given you the gift of grace. You are righteous because He is righteous, and you are not called to walk in the death the rest of the world does. You walk in the light of life.

Romans 5:12; Isaiah 53:11
