The Essential Doctrines

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (Hebrews 6:2)

The author of Hebrews emphasized that baptism includes multiple forms, not just water baptism as commonly thought. Baptism takes on several forms in the Bible. Let’s look at three.

1. Baptism into Christ: This symbolizes a believer's identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and their spiritual rebirth at the moment of salvation. (Romans 6:3-4)

2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit: This baptism empowers believers by the Holy Spirit for service and ministry after salvation. The initial evidence of this baptism is speaking in tongues. (Acts 1:5, 2:4)

3. Water Baptism: This is the public declaration of faith in Christ, where the believer is immersed in water. (Matthew 28:19) It signifies the believer's death to their old life and their resurrection to new life in Christ.

Another essential doctrine mentioned in Hebrews 6:2 is the laying on of hands. This practice, taught by Jesus Himself in Mark 16:18, imparts healing, blessing, and the Holy Spirit to others through the act of faith. Believers physically touch someone as a point of contact for God’s power to flow through them. Next is the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead. The Bible teaches that at the return of Jesus, the dead in Christ shall rise first (1 Thessalonians 4:16), and those who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. The Bible also speaks of a resurrection unto judgment for those who have rejected Christ. (John 5:28-29)

Finally, the last concept discussed is the doctrine of eternal judgment. This sobering truth teaches that every person will face judgment after death. (Hebrews 9:27) Once you die, your eternal destiny is sealed. If you have rejected Christ, you will face eternal condemnation and separation from God in hell.

Practical Application

These foundational truths are crucial for every believer. They should not be taken lightly. Study, understand, and apply them for spiritual growth and maturity.
