The Fear of the Lord and Long Life

The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. The way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. (Proverbs 10:27-29)

The fear of the Lord doesn’t mean being afraid of Him but rather it means having a deep respect and reverence for Him, recognizing His authority and goodness. The writer of Proverbs 10:27-29 explained that a life of respect toward God would lengthen our days on this earth. Fearing God gives us a longer life.

However, having more days is not enough; we must also fill them with worth and purpose. That is why these wisdom verses express that righteous people are also filled with gladness.

Scripture continues to explain that there will be strength with longevity if we live our lives uprightly. That’s how I want to live out my days: strong, full of joy, and accomplishing God’s purpose. Don’t you?
