The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it. (Proverbs 9:10-12)
Wisdom does not come from book learning, classes taken, or experience. Real wisdom comes from the Lord. The writer of Proverbs 9:10-12 goes deeper, saying that knowledge of God’s way of doing things also gives us understanding. This knowledge is not just “head knowledge” but is genuinely transforming in nature. Knowing more about God by reading His Word, spending time in His presence, and being with His people will shape our values, influence our decisions, and guide our interactions with others and the world around us.
When we cultivate a relationship with God as the priority in our lives, we begin to see the world through His eyes, allowing us to go through difficulties in life with clarity and purpose.
God continues to say that living this way is good for wisdom and understanding, and He will multiply our days and lengthen our lives. When we first read this, it almost seems redundant. However, God is talking about filling and lengthening our lives. God doesn’t just want us to have more quantity but He also wants us to have more excellent quality.
As we pursue a deeper relationship with God, align our actions with His will, and seek wisdom through His Word, we will experience the abundant life He promised.
Practical Application
Make it a habit to read the Word every day. Understanding God’s Word will develop your wisdom exponentially. If you haven’t already done so, consider joining a Bible study group to explore God’s Word with others.
