The Fully Furnished Believer

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)

Acts 2:1-4 records one of the most powerful moments in the church's history! As they were praying in the upper room in obedience to the words of Jesus, the Holy Spirit sat upon each of them like as of fire. Scripture did not say that it was a fire, but it was like a fire. What is a fire like?

Fire is bright and fills a room. In the same way, there was an enlightening of revelation that sat upon them. Fire is powerful and productive. It creates a substantial amount of force and strength, as the Holy Spirit does in the believer’s life.

The English phrase sat upon is the Greek word epi and means to be fully furnished.

Furnished in what way? When you think of a fully furnished house, it is one where nothing else is needed for the house to work in its full capacity. A fully furnished believer is one who already has everything they need to operate in supernatural power and ability.

How did they operate when they were fully filled with this supernatural furnishing? The Bible says the first thing they did was to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. The word utterance implies the Holy Spirit uses your vocal cords, tongue, and voice to say His words. God wants us to surrender our mouths and our lives to Him.

Practical Application

You must submit your tongue and your words to the Holy Spirit for Him to speak through you. Instead of complaining and griping about life, submit your tongue and your words to the Holy Spirit. Speak in tongues as you pray and speak with the Spirit as you speak to others, saying only what He wants you to say.

Acts 4:31; Acts 13:52
