The Government on His Shoulder

Writer's picture: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

You’ve probably heard this verse used frequently during the Christmas season. In this famous passage, the prophet Isaiah described Jesus. However, sometimes, we hear a verse so often that it loses its impact. It’s essential to dive in and let the Holy Spirit show us more, especially with the most familiar verses.

The Hebrew word for government (misra) refers to rule, dominion, and authority. The phrase “upon His shoulder” (shekel) means bearing a burden, emphasizing the Messiah’s capacity to govern humanity and creation. Just as epaulets on a soldier’s shoulder signify rank and authority, Christ’s role as King is marked by His divine burden and consent to rule with justice.

Isaiah ascribed the following titles to the Messiah, each revealing a bit about His character:

  • Wonderful Counsellor- He is the source of divine wisdom, offering perfect guidance in everyday moments.

  • The Mighty God – He is omnipotent, mighty, and stronger than any issue or problem facing you.

  • The Everlasting Father- He is a protector and provider who never leaves and never forsakes us. He is always there for us no matter what.

  • The Prince of Peace- He brings reconciliation between God and humanity, establishing genuine and lasting peace.

Isaiah declared that the Messiah’s kingdom would expand without end. Unlike earthly kingdoms that rise and fall, Christ’s rule will endure forever. This reign fulfills the promise made to David, ensuring that his throne will be established through Christ, the ultimate King.

Practical Application

Just as governments place badges of rank on a leader's shoulder, Christians are called to put on Christ (Romans 13:14). As we are used in authority or position in every aspect of our lives, we are to submit to His righteous rule.

Jeremiah 23:5; Psalm 45:6
