The Great Outpouring

Writer: Bishop Keith ButlerBishop Keith Butler

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:2-4)

Let’s consider three powerful manifestations that marked the day of Pentecost:

  • A sound from heaven – The rushing mighty wind acknowledged the presence of the Holy Spirit. This wasn’t a natural wind but a supernatural sound. In Scripture, wind is often associated with the Spirit of God. The wind at Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit moves in powerful and unpredictable ways, and we must be ready to follow and flow as He leads.

  • Cloven tongues like fire—In Scripture, fire often symbolizes God’s presence, purification, and empowerment. The flames resting on each believer illustrated God's method of personally anointing and equipping them. His presence was no longer confined to the temple; He was now dwelling within His people.

  • Speaking in tongues – This was the immediate evidence that the Holy Spirit had filled the believers. For us today, speaking in tongues continues to be a sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. It serves as a way to pray beyond our understanding, allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede through us.

The word utterance means the style or manner of speaking. It was not random babbling; it was communication as the Spirit enabled them. Unlike natural languages, speaking in tongues is not connected to your mind — it is connected to your spirit. This means that when believers speak in tongues, their spirit directly communicates with God.

Practical Application

The Holy Spirit moves beyond your intellect. When you feel confused and are trying to figure out what to do next, pray in the Holy Spirit. Be open to His leading and wisdom and follow it immediately.

1 Corinthians 12:10; Acts 13:52
