The Promotion of Barnabas

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. (Acts 13:1)

The early church included a diverse group of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. In Antioch, for example, several people were called to the five-fold ministry office of teacher, prophet, or both. Later, in Acts 13, Saul was appointed to the apostolic ministry through the ministry of the church in Antioch. The Holy Spirit powerfully empowered these men to spread the Gospel to the Gentiles.

Some have questioned why certain individuals are chosen for ministry positions while others are not. Every believer is called to serve, but some are specifically called to one of the fivefold ministry offices as church leaders.

Barnabas was recognized as one of the key leaders in the early church. He quickly became known for his generosity, faithfulness, and encouragement toward other believers. His commitment to serving and giving allowed him to take on a more prominent leadership role in Acts 13. This pattern is evident throughout the Bible: faithfulness in one season leads to promotion in the next.

The Holy Spirit aimed to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a greater mission. Separation isn’t always an assault from the enemy. Sometimes, God separates you from certain people, situations, or workplaces because He has a higher calling for your life.

Barnabas’ selection wasn’t random; it stemmed from his faithfulness and readiness to serve.

Practical Application

Not everyone is called to a five-fold ministry office, but every believer is called to serve. Before Barnabas was called, he had already demonstrated faithfulness. Promotion comes through consistent obedience. How can you demonstrate your faithfulness to the Lord in the areas where you are currently serving?

Acts 11:22; Ephesians 4:11
