The Remnant

But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. (Romans 11:4-6)

Romans 11:4-6 draws our attention to a crucial truth; there was an unyielding remnant who remained faithful to God amidst a nation that had turned away. Just as in the time of Elijah, where God reserved for Himself seven thousand who had not bowed their knees to Baal, in the present time, there is a remnant that are faithful to the Word of God.

The word remnant speaks of a chosen few - a small but mighty group who remain steadfast in their devotion to God, undeterred by the prevailing trends and pressures of the world around them. They are the ones who stand firm as living testimonies of God's grace and power, even when many other people have turned away.

What sets this remnant apart? Paul tells us it is the election of grace. We know the Greek word for grace is charis. And there are at least 18 different English words that are utilized for grace. Charis in this verse means gift. The election of grace is the divine act of God's favor gifted toward them. It results from God's love and kindness poured out upon those who humbly receive it. The election of grace overrules salvation by works, leaving no room for boasting or self-righteousness. The remnant of grace reminds us of God's faithfulness. Despite the unfaithfulness of the majority, God remains steadfast in His love and purpose. He preserves a remnant who will carry His message, extend His love, and serve as a beacon of hope in a world desperately in need of His saving grace.

Practical Application

As a follower of Christ, you may encounter opposition or challenges to your faith. Be part of the remnant. Be courageous and unwavering in your commitment to God. Anchor yourself in His Word, seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and surround yourself with fellow believers who can support and encourage you on your journey.
