The Signs of the Times

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matthew 24:35-39)

Jesus told us when He returned, it would be as it was in the days of Noah. So, we should understand what it was like in the days of Noah. The Bible says that there was great wickedness and the heart of every man was evil continually. (See Genesis 6:5) Wickedness and evil are both the Hebrew word ra and mean harmful, hurtful, mischief, wrong, bad, and displeasing. Their actions and their hearts were set to do things they knew would harm their bodies, were wrong in the sight of God, and were displeasing to both God and others as well. Jesus told us two specific things they did that were ra.

First, He said that they were eating and drinking. How is that evil? When you are eating in pleasure for the purpose of allowing it to do what only God can do (i.e., bring you peace, bring you purpose, etc.), your eating becomes worship and is the sin of gluttony. When you are drinking and getting drunk to bring you peace and deal with anxiety and other issues, you are allowing the drink to become your god, and you worship it as a drunkard.

The second way they did evil (ra) was by marrying and giving of marriage. They had corrupted what God created by saying, “We don’t care about what God says about marriage. We will live how we want to live, have relationships with whoever we want to, and do whatever we want to.” When man makes this decision, he becomes his own god, self-glorifying, self-focused and self-destructive.

Practical Application

Do not seek things for the peace, power, or promise that only God can give.

Acts 1:7; 1 Thessalonians 5:2
