The Theocracy

All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers. And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. (Deuteronomy 8:1-2)

Many forms of government have arisen over the years; some have stayed, and some have just become history. You’re aware of Democracies, Republics, and Monarchies, but one that isn’t referred to much is a Theocracy. A Theocracy is a form of government where God Himself is the ruler. Unlike human governance systems, a Theocracy operates on God’s principles and laws, with God directly guiding the nation through priests and prophets.

Israel began as a Theocracy. This was not just God ruling in general; God gave them specific instructions for worship, justice, and daily living. His laws were comprehensive, covering moral, civic, and ceremonial matters, ensuring that Israel would reflect His holiness as His chosen people.

Israel’s purpose was to be a light to the nations, showcasing God's glory and goodness through their obedience and relationship with Him. God’s governance of Israel as a Theocracy was a profound expression of His love, sovereignty, and desire for a relationship. Through His laws, covenants, and chosen leaders, He provided everything Israel they needed to thrive.Although our nation may not be a Theocracy, we should consider our lives to be run by God. Christians are called to live with God as our ruler and decision-maker, and when you allow God to truly reign, He will provide for you, just as He provided for Israel, giving them what they needed to thrive.

Practical Application

God’s Word and commands are not burdensome but rather they are life-giving. God wants you to thrive in this life and has given His Word so you know what to do. Follow in obedience and seek God’s Word when making any decision in your life, small or significant.
