Two Immutable Things

Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. (Hebrews 6:17-18)

The word immutable is ametathetos in Greek. It means unchangeable. Noah Webster’s Mercian Dictionary of the English Language, 1828 edition, defines immutable as unalterable, not capable or susceptible to change. In these ever changing and extremely unstable times, how comforting is it to know two things that absolutely cannot change? The two immutable things mentioned in Hebrews 6:17-18 are the Word of God and the blood of Jesus.

The Word of God is a rock that does not disintegrate or dissolve. It is the foundation for life for those who stand upon it. But others, who don’t receive it, stumble on it. 1 Peter 2:8 calls it: “a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.”

Jesus said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35 and Mark 13:31). While the method of presenting it may adapt over the generations, God’s Word does not change with the times, and neither does the blood of Jesus. How important is the blood of Jesus? We find the blood from Genesis to Revelation.

In Genesis 3:21, when Adam and Eve fell, God shed the blood of an innocent animal to cover their sin and shame. The blood of the spotless lamb on the doorposts of their homes protected God’s people from the plague of death that swept over Egypt. Exodus 12:13 says, “And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.” And Revelation 12:11says, “And they overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.” The Word and the blood never lose their power!

Practical Application – The Word and the Blood of Jesus always produce life and they never change.

Hebrews 9:12; Psalm 119:89
