Unified Reverence

And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.) Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them. There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one. (Acts 5:11-16)

Acts 5:11 says great fear came upon all the church. The fear mentioned here is not about being terrified and anxious in the sight of God, but instead, it refers to a holy reverence and awe toward God. The sudden and tragic deaths of Ananias and Sapphira, who lied to the Holy Spirit, sent a clear message to the entire church: God is holy, and His presence must be respected and honored. This reverence led to deep repentance among the people. I am sure that those who were not living right made a quick decision to get right with God after witnessing two people drop dead.

The next thing that happened was that signs and wonders were performed by the hands of the apostles. This was only possible because the church was united and holy. They were with one accord, meaning there was no division, selfish agendas, discord, or gossip. There was only a shared commitment to God’s will.

Acts 5:14 reveals what this unity and holiness produced: “And believers were added to the Lord, both men and women in great numbers.” The same principle applies today. When the church operates in reverence, repentance, and unity, the Spirit of God moves mightily, drawing people to Himself. In the book of Acts, the streets were lined with the sick and those oppressed by unclean spirits, and every single one of them was healed.

Practical Application

If we want to see God move in power, we must create an atmosphere where His presence is honored and where people are in one accord. Do everything you can to promote unity.
