Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. (John 6:26)
God wants you to do the right thing, but that’s not enough. He also wants your heart and motivation to be right. If you are doing things for God out of the wrong motivation, eventually trouble will show up and your commitment level will wane.
Here in John 6:26, Jesus talked about those who followed Him only for a season and left shortly after. He said they sought Him because they saw the miracles and they ate of the loaves and were filled.
They were only following Jesus because of what they could get out of Jesus: a free meal, a good show, an exciting message. They weren’t there to receive from His revelation.
Some people tithe the same way - instead of wanting to obey God and follow God, they simply want the benefits that come from a financial transaction with their Heavenly Father. That should never be our heart's motivation in giving. It’s about commitment.
The same crowd that one day shouted “Hosanna!” is the same group that would turn around and say, “Crucify Him!”
Don’t allow yourself to become a fickle follower. Decide in your heart that you are going to trust and obey with every part of your life and during every season.
Practical Application
- What is your motivation for giving and living for God? Are you seriously seeking Him because you are committed to the King and His kingdom or because of what you hope to get out of Him? If your motivation isn’t right, you will lack the commitment when difficulties arise.
